E82: How Do You Regain Trust After Quitting Alcohol?
Loading
/

For many of us, our actions and behaviors have left our family and loved ones no longer trusting us, even after we’ve stopped drinking. So that begs the question – how do you regain trust after quitting alcohol? We’ve gathered Rachael, founder of Addict with Purpose; Michael, founder of SoberPress; and our adventurous friend Nadine to talk about what regaining trust from others – and in ourselves – has looked like in our lives.

You start getting trust back when you start telling the truth.

In this episode:

  • Learning to trust oneself
  • Consistency and time as the foundation of trust
  • Learning to do things that build trust
  • The value of authenticity in trust building
  • Honesty is a core component of trust
  • Living the apology
  • Understanding that we can’t put a timeframe on someone else’s trust
  • How to apologize with action
  • Learning to trust yourself through the hard times
  • Humility and its role in building trust
  • Also: learning to trust others

After 20 years of heavy drinking, I finally found the courage to stop in the fall of 2020. At 38 years old, I am chipping away at bettering myself and finding out who I truly am. I work at a resort in Olympic Valley. While I’m not currently in the field, I am passionate about farming and sustainable food systems. I love attending and helping out with live music events. I’m currently attempting to play the ukulele, but for now will leave the live performing up to the professionals. I enjoy swimming and cold river plunges. I love anything I can do with the husky dog Mulligan including: hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, gardening, and reading. I so enjoy coffee, bubble water, and chatting with anyone who will listen/engage about sobriety. Connection truly does beat addiction. @dinaplaysoutside

Hello! My name is Mike, I’m an alcoholic, dog person, designer, and human.

My quit date is April 9, 2019.

I’m originally from New Orleans and have lived in the south most of my life. However, I did live in Portland, Oregon for a while, where I started my career as an advertising Art Director.

I now live in Austin, TX where I continued my career working for a large ad agency.

I resigned from that job to pursue a career in freelancing. Just a few months after I got sober.

Being newly sober and embarking on a whole new lifestyle was a bit crazy to make such a huge change early in sobriety, but I did it. It was a calculated decision. My counselor in IOP, my private counselor, and a social worker strongly recommended it as it was a trigger for my drinking and using weed.

I founded SoberPress during the pandemic. It was an endeavor that helped me stay clean as I navigated being in isolation because of COVID-19. In August of 2020, I launched my Instagram page: @soberpress, and serendipitously found an amazing supportive community online. At the same time, I was working on establishing a blog soberpress.org where I would soon feature stories of recovery from around the world.

I’m very much involved in the community holding ambassadorships, appearing in podcasts, running SoberPress on Facebook, and helping with SoberHope.
