3 million people die each year from alcohol. Have you ever wondered how to help? How to start serving others? It turns out that often, the best person to help an alcoholic is another alcoholic.
In this episode, we talk with Drifter from Sobertown Podcast, our friend Molly from the I Am Sober app community, and Michelle from The Sobriety Playbook about what it means to serve others in recovery.
We explain how teaching and sharing our experiences helps reinforce the lessons in our own lives. Michelle tells us that “the opposite of depression is expression” and that sharing our stories, being vulnerable allows us to also express ourselves. In contrast, Molly talks about setting boundaries in serving, recognizing burnout and being careful to find balance in the time we spend giving ourselves to others, and Michelle follows that with explaining that self care is service to ourselves, and is extremely important. It’s easy to believe we don’t have something to give, that we don’t have enough wisdom or enough sober time to be sharing, but Julie asserts that service doesn’t have to be something huge, but can be something small, like an honest conversation with a struggling friend. Steve talks about how just showing up to meetings and being present is an act of service, and hosting or chairing often becomes the next step in giving back to the community.
Serving others is always a win-win situation. As Drifter says, “Giving back restores my soul.”
