In this episode, we talk about the affects that loneliness has on alcholism recovery. We’ve invited sober influencer Rachael (Addict with Purpose), sober podcast host Scott (The Sober Heathen), and our dear friend Coryn to talk about how loneliness has played a part in both their addiction and their recovery. It seems nearly everyone has struggled with loneliness at times, and while it may look different for each person, we share some very relatable ways to cope.
“I’m not asking for too much, I’m just asking the wrong person.”
In this episode:
- Lack of parental connection
- Poor quality friends when in active addiction
- Feeling lonely when you’re not alone
- Taking initiative to establish relationships
- Willingness to risk rejection
- Realizing some people can’t connect the way you want them to
- Our needs will evolve with time
- Letting yourself be truly seen
- Isolation vs. solitude
- Loneliness as a lack of identity
- Finding the wrong people
- Growth is necessary for connection
- Reaching out for help
- People pleasing
- Learning not to pre-judge people
“Loneliness is a lack of reciprocal emotional connection – with someone else, or even with yourself.”
Julie and Steve mention Brene’ Brown – like they always do. Visit her website at www.brenebrown.com and check out her books and videos. It really will change your life.

Coryn is a 38 year old accountant in Southern California who stubbornly won an argument with her ex-husband by committing to take a year off from drinking and unexpectedly found the strength to create a life she no longer needed to escape from. After quitting drinking on June 23, 2021 she found her community on the I Am Sober app, and has connected with people all over the world who realize the toll alcohol takes on our health.
Scott is a proud father of twin boys. He hosts The Sober Heathen podcast with which he documents his recovery journey. Although it is sometimes painful and deeply raw, it helps him tremendously to recover honestly and openly! He has 4 OWI’s, thousands in fines due, no license until the 30’s (2030), he is living back home, and he still has never felt better and in more control! Recovery is worth it because with it there is always HOPE!
Rachael is proud to say I’m in long term recovery from both drugs and alcohol. My recovery date is 7/30/2017. I have chosen not to be anonymous and to use my voice and passion to help others like me find a solution. I am a harm reductionist and a certified peer support specialist in 2 states as well as recovery advocate. I am passionate about helping and inspiring others to better themselves which is why I created my page Addict with Purpose.
