We hear people talk about “emotional support”, and we know it’s important to our sobriety… but what does emotional support actually look like? How can it help? In this episode, we talk with our friends Dan and Liz about how to support one another emotionally as we make our way through sobriety, and through life. One of the hardest parts of recovery is facing our emotions without trying to numb them. One of the greatest tools we can use is leaning on others in our lives to support us as we start facing those emotions and learning how to deal with them. For a lot of us, we come into sobriety having no idea what emotional support is even supposed to look like. Whether it’s how to ask for and accept emotional support, or how to give it… we’re here to talk about it.
Listen as Dan explains how he learned to let people be there for him and to let them see his emotions, especially when men risk being seen as weak if they let their emotions show. Julie shares how she overcame feeling like a burden when she needed to reach out to someone for support. You’ll hear the group explore the differences in the emotional needs of men and the emotional needs of women. We also discuss empathy, vulnerability, emotional validation, and other types of emotional support.
Steve mentions the “Playing Catch” analogy. You can read more about it on our blog at https://throughtheglassrecovery.com/category/blog/
